Joachim Rust (born 1968) grew up in Windhoek and at nearby Farm Ondekaremba. Caroline (born Vollmer, 1967), from Interlaken in Switzerland, met Joachim while on a traineeship in Namibia after completing her education in 1988. First they leased guest farm Mon Desir south of Otjiwarongo. In May 2000 the young family moved to their dream farm, Otjosongombe at the Waterberg. Daughter Dominique (born in 1991) and sons Joachim (1993) and Martin (1994) are at boarding school in Windhoek, at the multicultural 'Deutsche Höhere Privatschule', but they come home almost every weekend.

  Our Team
The majority of our 30 staffers at Waterberg Wilderness has looked after our guests for many years already. We do our own staff training for housekeeping and agriculture, while the German and English-speaking guest relations staffers are trained by nature conservation experts.

In April 2006 we bought two houses in Okakarara, about 25 km away, for staff accommodation. This allows our staffers to have a normal life with many social contacts outside their working environment. Only the late shift spends the night at Waterberg Wilderness; everybody else is taken home in the evening.

Markus Kalimbwe (born 1964) is from Vungu Vungu near Rundu in the Kavango Region. He left school after completing grade 10 and went on to tend his parents’ livestock. In 1998 he joined us at our farm Mon Desir where he helped to clear the bush for making charcoal. We were impressed by his dedicated hard work and employed him as our gardener. Markus turned into an enthusiastic hobby botanist and ornithologist over the years. He still takes care of the gardens. He is also very good at languages and apart from Portuguese and French speaks German quite well. In the afternoon he conducts guided tours to the plateau of Waterberg and explains the many interesting things encountered on the way to our guests.
Lukas Malakia (born 1965) joined our team in 1990. Thus he is the ‘most senior’ member of staff. He is a family man through and through and uses every opportunity to pay a visit to his relatives in Ondobe near Oshakati in the Ohangwena Region. He also takes good care of his four children and sees to it that they go to school regularly and do their homework. Lukas Malakia is Joachim’s right-hand man when it comes to technical chores. He takes turns with Markus Kalimbwe and Lukas Shivoko in guiding our hiking tours; he also takes our guests for drives around Waterberg Wilderness.
Lukas Shivoko (born 1979) is a nature lover and a hiking guide with heart and soul, just like his other two colleagues in guest relations. Lukas also welcomes guests at the reception, keeps their drinks topped up at the bar and makes sure that the rooms are kept spick-and-span. When he joined us in 1999 he spoke mostly Afrikaans. Since then he has learnt English and a little German. He comes from Rundu in the Kavango Region.
Paulus Kanyanga (born 1974, brother of Markus Kalimbwe) joined us in 2000 and thus is part of our core staff as well. He and Lukas Shivoko share their tasks at the reception, the bar and as supervisors of the cleaners. Paulus loves to play soccer in his spare time; which is one more reason why he is totally happy about moving to Okakarara in April 2006, as there are sports fields and soccer teams in the village.
The kitchen is in the capable hands of two awesome duos: chef Refinia Nomases (from Otjiwarongo, born 1966) with her assistant Seth Ujamba (from Ukwas, 16 km away, born 1967) and chef Wilbard Khwedi (from Oniiwe near Ondangwa in the Oshana Region, born 1965) with his assistant Uatjivisa Mureko (from Okakarara, born 1981). They are the ones who dish up the delectable maize porridge and hot crispy rolls for breakfast, the oven-fresh cakes in the afternoon and the exquisite three-course evening dinners.
