  Delightful Route
Waterberg Wilderness is situated on the D 2512 gravel road, 8 km north-east of Waterberg Plateau Park Resort.

The road runs east of Waterberg and is part of a less frequented, but very charming route to Grootfontein. This delightful alternative to the tar road via Otjiwarongo turns from the B 1 tar road (Okahandja – Otjiwarongo) onto the C 22 tar road and the D 2512 / D 2612 gravel road to Rietfontein, and finally joins the tar road from Otjiwarongo to Grootfontein. Flanked by the plateau of Waterberg you drive through the beautiful tree and shrub savannah scenery of the east, and ever so often you will spot game animals or guinea fowl at the roadside.
Usually the gravel road is quite suitable for a city car. During the months from October to April, however, when rain is more likely to occur, the road may be washed away in places after heavy downpours. We then recommend the alternative route via Okakarara: after entering the village on the C 22 you turn left onto the D 3827 sand road, continue for about 24 km (12 km are single-track, through farmland) to the D 2512 and follow the signposts to the reception of Waterberg Wilderness (about 4 km).

Worthwhile stops along the way
From Windhoek: Wood carvings and other souvenirs from Namibia and the larger region are for sale at two street markets in the little town of Okahandja. Prices are extremely high and leave room for bargaining. Both markets are open all day. Caution: valuables left in the car should not be visible for passers-by.

Okahandja is also known for its biltong companies. Freshly dried meat from Closwa and Piet's Biltong Shop is available in many different flavours.

Continuing to Grootfontein/Tsumeb/Etosha: Farm Hoba, southwest of Grootfontein, is famous for the Hoba Meteorite. The fact that

apparently it did not burst into pieces, when it entered earth’s atmosphere about 80.000 years ago, makes this meteorite particularly remarkable. It consists mostly of iron, is 1 m thick, measures about 3 m around the edge and weighs 50 to 60 tons. This makes it one of the largest finds on earth. The meteorite is under protection as a national monument and can be viewed any time of the day for a small entrance fee.

The meteorite's metallic rock is clearly visible in places.
